Street Lights

Anyone who’s ridden with me in a vehicle on more than just a couple occasions is aware of my strange power.  It happens to me nearly everyday, particularly on streets I frequent.  Over the years I have heard of other people having this power but it does seem to be somewhat rare.  The ability of which I speak is that of turning off streetlights as I drive under them.

When it first started out, it was just the occasional turning off of a random streetlight here and there; nothing too particularly out of the ordinary and not really to the degree that I couldn’t just write it off as me just noticing it happening more readily than other people.  But over the years it has evolved into an undeniable facet of my existence.  So first it was turning them off basically randomly when I drove under them.  Then it progressed into me turning them off as I walked under them.  Then that transformed into being able to turn them on as well; although to this day that’s slightly less likely than the off.  Sometimes it happens at a short distance, but the majority of the time it happens directly overhead.

This seems rather silly to those who haven’t witnessed it first hand.  They try to come up with all sorts of reasons as to why it’s “happening”.  Typically it’s the “you just notice it more than most people do, but surely it happens equally to everyone”.  I’ve changed color of car over the years so it can’t be the reflectiveness of a particular color (plus it happens when I’m walking).  But when people are with me they begin to believe, as it happens an extraordinarily high number of times, certainly more than they typically would notice on an average night.

Over the past few years I have been working on channeling this ability.  Not that it’s really useful for anything; unfortunately I still have no control over stoplights.  I suppose if I’m ever in a hotel with a light glaring in through the window it might come in handy then.  But I have been surprisingly successful in these past couple of years, again particularly with lights I frequently pass by.  I honestly get this feeling of which lights are susceptible to my power and over half the time I can will them to change state.  It’s easier to turn them off, but if I concentrate hard enough sometimes I can get one to turn on as well, but it’s like I have to channel my own energy into it.  I had one the other night I was really trying to turn on.  I was certainly getting a strong feeling from it so I figured I’d give it a try.  I have witnesses that saw it come halfway on but it just wasn’t having it that night, and when I got out of range it turned back off again.  So at this point you’re probably thinking I’m pretty crazy, particularly if you didn’t even believe the first few paragraphs.  But I have witnesses to multiple induced-change-of-state occurrences as well.

I’ll keep working on those stoplights, but since a lot of them around here are on strict timing, and not sensors, I don’t think I have much of a shot.
